KEY STAGE 3
Year 7 Classics
Pupil’s begin their studies in Latin using the Minimus course, which provides a light- hearted introduction to the subject. Pupils practise reading Latin aloud and translating simple Latin sentences; they enjoy completing the language exercises and the work they do on grammar and vocabulary building can greatly improve their linguistic ability and literacy skills.
The setting for the stories is Roman Britain; research for this topic, using the library and the internet, encourages independent learning. Pupils are keen to share their knowledge with the rest of the class in lessons and class discussions make for a cooperative learning environment. The study of the ancient inhabitants of Britain provides a fruitful point of comparison for modern society and enables pupils to develop a greater appreciation of the cultural heritage they share with each other.
Greek and Roman mythology also prove popular with the pupils. Stories are discussed and analysed using Edward de Bono’s Six Hats Thinking and provide a rich context for creative pieces and artwork. To add to their growing linguistic knowledge pupils are introduced to the Greek alphabet and enjoy the challenge of writing in this novel script.
In the Summer Term the pupils explore the influence of Ancient Greek and Latin on the English language and trace the links between Classical and English words. In celebration of the Olympic Games being held in London in 2012, Summer Term lessons will be filled with activities designed to teach pupils about the origins of this famous sporting festival.
Ultimately our Year 7 pupils enjoy investigating the achievements of the Classical world. It is hoped that the lessons they learn from the past will fire their imagination and prove a useful basis for further study of the humanities throughout their time at Watford Grammar School for Girls.
