Watford Grammar School

KEY STAGE 3

Year 8 and 9 Latin

About 55-70 pupils choose to study Latin each year; they are taught in three mixed ability groups. We use the Cambridge Latin Course which comprises:

  • Cambridge Latin Course Books 1 and 2.
  • Cambridge Latin Course e-learning. resources for Books 1 and 2.
  • Cambridge Latin Course website (www.cambridgescp.com).

Activities for language include:

  • Translating from Latin to English.
  • Reading stories and plays.
  • Watching dramatisation of stories and plays (e-learning resource).

Activities for civilisation include:

  • Video clips on the Roman way of life (e-learning resource).
  • Art and craft (e.g. making masks when we study the theatre).
  • Research using the library and/or the internet.

Pupils are encouraged to use the Cambridge Latin Course website for independent learning. Activities for language and civilisation consolidate the topics studied in class and also provide extension tasks. Language tests (vocabulary and grammar) develop linguistic skills and give the opportunity for self assessment. Links to civilisation topics provide additional material for pupils who wish to pursue their interest in a particular area.

All pupils take the Cambridge Latin Course tests – one test in Year 8 and two tests in Year 9. The written tests assess language and civilisation. The oral tests assess reading Latin aloud.
The results of the written tests are sent to Cambridge to be moderated. Pupils who pass receive certificates. By the end of Year 9 most pupils have three certificates to reward their effort and achievement.

Lady’s Close House

Having looked carefully at the capital development needs of the school and the level of funding currently available to us, we now intend to focus our energy on restoring Lady's Close House.

This is the most historic building on the school site and is central to every girl's development at WGGS. Lady's Close is the Y7 base, where pupils have their own space and Form Rooms. The girls have special affection for the building because it represents the start of their careers at WGGS. The grand old house is also the home of the English Department.

The building is well over 100 years old and is in dire need of modernisation and refurbishment. We have ambitious plans to recapture the splendour and elegance of its history, while incorporating the technology and physical improvements that will bring Lady's Close House into the 21st century in appropriate WGGS style.
