Watford Grammar School

Enterprise Education

The school is fully committed to enterprise education, even in Years 7 and 8. Conscious of the need to promote female entrepreneurship, we provide all our girls with opportunities to develop their entrepreneurial skills. There are a number of programmes in place for all girls between Year 9 and the Lower Sixth. As well as special activities and projects, we have opportunities through each form’s charity fund raising to develop money-making schemes using entrepreneurial skills.

YEAR 9

In Year 9 all girls have an Enterprise Day provided by Young Enterprise entitled ‘Enterprise in Action’. This is part of a three-day programme off-timetable which also includes The Citizenship Conference and a day of work-shadowing. In addition, girls taking Integrated Studies in Year 9 follow a six-week programme called ‘Learn to Earn’ which is provided by Young Enterprise. There is also an opportunity for girls to take part in the Business Incentive Scheme run by the charity Barnardos. This is an extra-curricular activity for about 20 girls.

YEAR 10

In the Autumn Term of Year 10, all girls follow a two-day enterprise programme. One of the days is provided by Young Enterprise: Project Business is an activity based programme developing teamwork and decision making skills in small groups in a competitive framework. The other Enterprise Day involves a talk by a female entrepreneur, team building activities and an opportunity for the groups to develop a business plan for a product or service. In follow-up PACE lessons the groups submit the finished business plan with some groups giving presentations to the whole year group. The best plan qualifies the group to join the Young Enterprise Company programme for the rest of the academic year.

Lower Sixth

All girls have the opportunity to take part in the Young Enterprise company programme. Normally about 70 girls in four companies join the scheme which is an extra-curricular activity. Besides taking part in the national competition as companies, the girls also take the Young Enterprise examination set by O.C.R.

Lady’s Close House

Having looked carefully at the capital development needs of the school and the level of funding currently available to us, we now intend to focus our energy on restoring Lady's Close House.

This is the most historic building on the school site and is central to every girl's development at WGGS. Lady's Close is the Y7 base, where pupils have their own space and Form Rooms. The girls have special affection for the building because it represents the start of their careers at WGGS. The grand old house is also the home of the English Department.

The building is well over 100 years old and is in dire need of modernisation and refurbishment. We have ambitious plans to recapture the splendour and elegance of its history, while incorporating the technology and physical improvements that will bring Lady's Close House into the 21st century in appropriate WGGS style.
