Watford Grammar School

Merilyn Fraser (nee Ratcliffe)

I was very interested to read memories of the school from those at the school 1961-68.  I am in touch with Jane Johnson, Judy Richards, Janet Dudding, Valerie Smith, Jacqui Wordingham and Shan Williams but would love to be in touch with more of you.  We were thinking of organising a reunion in the Watford area in April 2011, probably Saturday 16 April or Sunday 17 April while I am in England (I live now in Malaysia).  Is there still an Old Girls Association?  My apologies to Nicola Mellor for not responding to her request to join earlier.  I also have memories of the dance outfits - I loved the dancing, architecture with Miss Tennet, geography field trip to Juniper Hall, pottery lessons, the new 6th form common room, father and daughter tennis tournaments, freezing cold hockey and sports with just my navy blue knickers until they let us wear shorts and quaking outside Miss Tennet's room with an excellent!  I am currently teaching geography in the International School here in Melaka, Malaysia.  So many of us became teachers.  Unfortunately, both Sylvia and Pamela Smith died of cancers.  Anyone reading this that remembers me, please make contact on my email: . I'm on Facebook too. Hope to see you in 2011.

Lady’s Close House

Having looked carefully at the capital development needs of the school and the level of funding currently available to us, we now intend to focus our energy on restoring Lady's Close House.

This is the most historic building on the school site and is central to every girl's development at WGGS. Lady's Close is the Y7 base, where pupils have their own space and Form Rooms. The girls have special affection for the building because it represents the start of their careers at WGGS. The grand old house is also the home of the English Department.

The building is well over 100 years old and is in dire need of modernisation and refurbishment. We have ambitious plans to recapture the splendour and elegance of its history, while incorporating the technology and physical improvements that will bring Lady's Close House into the 21st century in appropriate WGGS style.
