History

Studying History helps to explain the world we live in today and develops important skills for life. It is also fascinating to learn about people in the past: their problems, what motivated them and the consequences of their actions. We promote the enjoyment of History through stimulating, varied and accessible teaching as well as extended curriculum opportunities at all key stages. We aim to develop a life-long love of History that will continue beyond academic study.

As our students learn about some exciting historical events they are also developing essential skills for adult life. They are constantly encouraged to develop enquiring minds: to question the causes and results of historical events; to assess how change occurs and why some things stay the same; to understand the past from the perspectives of contemporaries and historians; and to develop their own theories through the analysis of a wide range of historical sources. Our History courses equip students with an understanding of modern society: the origins of key institutions; political, social, cultural and religious issues; and their rights and responsibilities as citizens of the 21st century.

At present there are ten history teachers in the department, five of whom also teach Government and Politics (see Government & Politics website entry). History is taught entirely by these specialists as a popular subject throughout the school. Years 7 to 11 are taught in the large History Room, fully equipped with ICT and AV resources. There are also two sixth form teaching rooms, similarly equipped.

Lady’s Close House

Having looked carefully at the capital development needs of the school and the level of funding currently available to us, we now intend to focus our energy on restoring Lady's Close House.

This is the most historic building on the school site and is central to every girl's development at WGGS. Lady's Close is the Y7 base, where pupils have their own space and Form Rooms. The girls have special affection for the building because it represents the start of their careers at WGGS. The grand old house is also the home of the English Department.

The building is well over 100 years old and is in dire need of modernisation and refurbishment. We have ambitious plans to recapture the splendour and elegance of its history, while incorporating the technology and physical improvements that will bring Lady's Close House into the 21st century in appropriate WGGS style.
