Welcome to the Languages Department
The Languages Department aims to develop pupils' ability to use the language effectively for communication; to offer insights into the cultural of the countries where the language is spoken; to develop an awareness of the nature of language and language learning; to provide enjoyment and intellectual stimulation and to provide a sound base for further study.
The Languages Department consists of 8 enthusiastic and dedicated teachers, who each have their own well-equipped classroom. In addition there is a Language Laboratory and a self-study room for pupils to use.
At entry in Year 7, three forms take French and three forms take German. Pupils are encouraged to speak the language from the first day.
In Year 8, pupils have the option of adding the other modern language and taster sessions are organised at Christmas and Easter.
Gifted pupils in year 9 have the opportunity to take their GCSE at the end of Year 10 and their AS examination in Year 11.
All pupils must take at least one modern foreign language at KS4 and a significant number take two. There are exciting plans to bring in Spanish at KS4.
In the VI Form languages are popular with currently 30 members of Lower VI taking either French or German.
