Languages
The Languages Department aims to develop pupils’ ability to use the language effectively for communication; to offer insights into the culture of the countries where the language is spoken; to develop an awareness of the nature of language and language learning; to provide enjoyment and intellectual stimulation and to provide a sound base for further study.
The Languages Department consists of 8 enthusiastic and dedicated teachers, who each have their own well-equipped classroom. In addition there is a Language Laboratory and a self-study room for pupils to use. We also have 2 language assistants who work with pupils in the Sixth Form and Year 11 to improve their oral skills.
At entry in Year 7, three forms take French and three forms take German. Pupils are encouraged to speak the language from the first day.
Taster sessions of the other modern language are organised regularly during Year 7, as pupils have the opportunity to add a second modern language in Year 8. Pupils will receive certificates during their taster lessons to celebrate their achievements.
Gifted pupils in Year 9 have the opportunity to take their GCSE at the end of Year 10 and their AS examination in Year 11. There is also the option for Year 9 pupils to attend Spanish taster sessions.
All pupils must take at least one modern foreign language at KS4 and a significant number take two. This year we are running our first fast-track Spanish Year 10 class, who will take their GCSE in two years.
In the Sixth Form languages are popular with currently 40 members of Lower Sixth taking either French or German.
We also run a 10 week Chinese course (new in 2008-09) for 20 pupils selected from all year groups.
