Trips and Events

Every year we run an exchange visit to Mainz, Germany for pupils in Years 8-10. We have been exchanging with our partner school das Frauenlob Gymnasium for over thirty years.

The French exchange has been established with a school in Lesneven, Brittany for pupils in Years 9-10 and has proved to be very popular.

Second language students of German have the opportunity to visit the Christmas Markets in Germany.

Sixth formers are encouraged to participate in a work experience programme during February half-term.

Part of the A2 course is the study of a particular German / French region and sixth formers will be advised to participate in a departmental trip to the region concerned.

The Department organises study days, conferences, theatre trips and visits to the Europa Centre (Year 9) during the year.

Our language assistants and the departmental prefects run Language Club, which is enjoyed by Year 7/ 8 pupils. Members are taught a variety of languages to celebrate the diversity of languages spoken in school. Activities include creating an Advent wreath, which is presented in assembly and painting Easter eggs.

Sixth formers are advised to attend a weekly German / French film club.

Our pupils have been successful in gaining scholarships to spend time abroad e.g. Anglo-German and Anglo-French Fellowship (British Council).

Fasching is celebrated by Year 7 pupils in the form of a mask–making competition.

Every year the department celebrates the European Day of Languages through quizzes and a whole-school food tasting event. Please enjoy the photographs!

Lady’s Close House

Having looked carefully at the capital development needs of the school and the level of funding currently available to us, we now intend to focus our energy on restoring Lady's Close House.

This is the most historic building on the school site and is central to every girl's development at WGGS. Lady's Close is the Y7 base, where pupils have their own space and Form Rooms. The girls have special affection for the building because it represents the start of their careers at WGGS. The grand old house is also the home of the English Department.

The building is well over 100 years old and is in dire need of modernisation and refurbishment. We have ambitious plans to recapture the splendour and elegance of its history, while incorporating the technology and physical improvements that will bring Lady's Close House into the 21st century in appropriate WGGS style.
