Watford Grammar School

Physical Education

Watford Girl’s is a high achieving Physical Education department that is proud of the many successes, which are achieved year in year out along with the excellent participation rates in all year groups.

Our departmental ethos is based upon a ‘Sport For All’ principle, to challenge the pupils of all abilities, to set and work towards realistic goals and thereby achieve their true potential. An extensive extra-curricular programme that includes participatory and competitive elements enhances the core curriculum. All girls are taught a broad and balanced physical education programme that includes individual, team and gymnastic activities that are planned, performed and evaluated by all pupils.

The school has great facilities. They include 2 hockey pitches/ Athletics Tracks, 6 tennis/netball courts, an indoor sports hall (4 Badminton Courts), a Dance Studio, an Indoor gymnasium and a high tech fitness suite. These facilities, coupled with enthusiastic and well-qualified staff, enable all pupils to have the best possible learning conditions available to them. Pupils showing exceptional talent in a particular sport are given guidance and support in their development, and strong links have been established with local clubs in order that such pupils can realise their full potential.

Watford Girl’s Physical Education department has displayed particular strength in Cross Country / Athletics and Hockey with representation at National, Regional, County and District levels. The school has many players of all ages representing county teams.

Lady’s Close House

Having looked carefully at the capital development needs of the school and the level of funding currently available to us, we now intend to focus our energy on restoring Lady's Close House.

This is the most historic building on the school site and is central to every girl's development at WGGS. Lady's Close is the Y7 base, where pupils have their own space and Form Rooms. The girls have special affection for the building because it represents the start of their careers at WGGS. The grand old house is also the home of the English Department.

The building is well over 100 years old and is in dire need of modernisation and refurbishment. We have ambitious plans to recapture the splendour and elegance of its history, while incorporating the technology and physical improvements that will bring Lady's Close House into the 21st century in appropriate WGGS style.
