Life in the Biology Department
The Biology Department offers a wide range of exciting opportunities for students to enrich their understanding of Biological issues:
- Biology Field Trip 2009 – Juniper Hall
The A2 Biology students spend a week at a residential Field Studies Council centre in order to learn some ecological principles and to complete their coursework requirements. This year was spent at Juniper Hall in Surrey.
Biology Expedition 2008 – Honduras. Last year, 21 Biology students travelled to Honduras in Central America to help with research into the biodiversity and conservation of the Cusuco National Park and the reefs around the Cayos Cochinos Islands. The students helped with vital wildlife surveys that will help to protect the National Park against deforestation and development.
Biology Olympiad. Year 13 Biologists take part in the Biology Olympiad, run annually by the Institute of Biology.

- The Biology Challenge.
Year 9 and 10 Biologists have the opportunity to test their Biological knowledge by taking part in the IOB Biology Challenge.
- Biology Society.
Run by an enthusiastic and committed team of year 13 students, BioSoc offers a wide range of activities for Biology students throughout the school. Guest speakers, careers advice, experiments, dissection, revision sessions, interview preparation, films and trips out make this an exciting aspect of being a Biology student at WGGS.
- Peer mentoring.
Volunteers from year 13 carry out mentoring of students from year 12. This helps both sets of students with their revision and preparation for examinations.

Lady’s Close House
Having looked carefully at the capital development needs of the school and the level of funding currently available to us, we now intend to focus our energy on restoring Lady's Close House.
This is the most historic building on the school site and is central to every girl's development at WGGS. Lady's Close is the Y7 base, where pupils have their own space and Form Rooms. The girls have special affection for the building because it represents the start of their careers at WGGS. The grand old house is also the home of the English Department.
The building is well over 100 years old and is in dire need of modernisation and refurbishment. We have ambitious plans to recapture the splendour and elegance of its history, while incorporating the technology and physical improvements that will bring Lady's Close House into the 21st century in appropriate WGGS style.
