Watford Grammar School

Welcome to the Science Department

The definition of Science is knowledge. From the start of year 7 to the end of year 13, students expand and develop their knowledge through an enormous variety and range of experiences in and beyond the classroom.

In a typical week, a student might have studied the origins of the universe, taken part in a debate on global warming and heard a jellybaby howl.

The Science Department is one of the largest Departments in the School. We pride ourselves on the excellent standards our students consistently achieve across all Key Stages and on the expertise and wealth of experience of our staff. Students study Key Stage 3 Science in Years 7 and 8. From Year 9 students will follow GCSE courses in Triple Award Science (full GCSE's in Biology, Chemistry and Physics) or Core and Additional Science, taught by subject specialists.

We have very high numbers of students studying A Levels in the Sciences and they are among the most popular in the School. Many students go on to study Science and related subjects at University.

The science department has 13 well-equipped and recently refurbished laboratories. Each has an interactive whiteboard with wireless internet access to be used with class sets of laptop computers.

We offer a range of extra-curricular activities and opportunities to our students including Year 7 Science Club, Astronomy Club, Salters’ Chemistry Camp, CREST awards, Paperclip Physics competition, Eco Club and Sixth Form Biology Society. We also have a range of visiting speakers from University and Industrial research departments to talk about their experiences and to encourage the students to continue scientific study beyond School.
