Social Science

Year 13 visit to Jaguar at Castle Bromwich  Year 13 visit to the Bank of England

The Social Science Department teaches in the Sixth Form providing AS and A2 courses in Economics, Business Studies, Sociology and Psychology. AS Accounting is also sometimes provided for some A Level Business Studies students. In this large and successful department all the courses are popular; currently about 70 girls take Economics, 50 take Psychology and 35 girls take Business Studies and Sociology.

Currently, there are five members of staff in the department - four full time and one part time. The department operates from two specialist classrooms and is well resourced with books and both rooms have projectors, televisions, visualisers and internet connections. This affords an opportunity for staff to use a variety of approaches to teaching and learning.
The department encourages the girls to take part in competitions such as Target 2.0 run by the Bank of England, and to go on the trips that have been arranged by subject staff, such as to Coca-Cola, BMW and Jaguar. Many Sixth Form girls also take part in the Young Enterprise scheme and all girls in Years 9 and 10 are involved in a number of Enterprise days. Enterprise days are designed to encourage the girls to develop their potential as entrepreneurs. The department has expanded its role in the school in the last ten years as it seeks to broaden the appeal of social science to all pupils at the school. A significant number of girls continue their studies of Economics, Business Studies and Sociology at university. In 2007, three girls gained entry to Cambridge University to read Economics. A feat repeated in 2009.

Lady’s Close House

Having looked carefully at the capital development needs of the school and the level of funding currently available to us, we now intend to focus our energy on restoring Lady's Close House.

This is the most historic building on the school site and is central to every girl's development at WGGS. Lady's Close is the Y7 base, where pupils have their own space and Form Rooms. The girls have special affection for the building because it represents the start of their careers at WGGS. The grand old house is also the home of the English Department.

The building is well over 100 years old and is in dire need of modernisation and refurbishment. We have ambitious plans to recapture the splendour and elegance of its history, while incorporating the technology and physical improvements that will bring Lady's Close House into the 21st century in appropriate WGGS style.
