Last Friday we had the privilege of hosting Matt Turmaine, our local MP for a talk to our A level Politics students. He discussed what got him into politics in the first place as well as his journey from councillor to MP.
He relayed some of the issues facing Watford, like the long NHS wait times or the use of AI in schools, but also talked about larger issues facing parliament, such as relations with the EU and Welfare.
A key part of the talk was centred around a Q & A with our students, where there was discussion about how Whips work, the current relationship with America and what that entails for us. These discussions brought politics from the classroom and put them into a real-world perspective, enabling many of our students to fully understand the application of government & politics teaching at A Level. Additionally, we introduced a quick-fire round ambushing Mr Turmaine, where we stated a word and he had to respond with a sentence, some of the most notable being Farage, Trump and tuition fees -areas that interested Sixth Form.
Thank you so much to Matt Turmaine, Ms Shanahan and Dr Cooke for helping us organise the event, and to GAPS society.
