Watford Grammar School for Girls was delighted to welcome Holocaust survivor and educator Steven Frank BEM to the school once again on Friday 12th December to speak to over 200 Year 9 students about his story and lived experience of the holocaust. This was a landmark moment for Steven as it was his 1000th talk since he began to discuss his Holocaust experiences in 1996. This was also Steven’s 22nd talk at Watford Girls – a school that he has been involved with as a parent, governor and educator for more than 40 years. Steven guided students through his life in Amsterdam pre-war, his family’s life under occupation and his journey to and time at Theresienstadt concentration camp before answering thoughtful and probing questions from students.
Steven Frank says ‘I think it is absolutely marvellous that this important landmark is at this wonderful school with whom I have been associated with over so many years.’
Sylvia Tai, Headteacher commented ‘We are delighted to have hosted Steven for his 1000th talk. More than 4000 of our Year 9 students have heard his testimony over the last 20 years and his words have a lasting impact on all those who hear him. Steven and his family have enriched our school and our community.’
Nailah, Year 9 told us ‘It was incredibly moving to meet Steven and to hear him tell his story. When we asked him how he felt about the Nazis, he told us that he had no place in his heart for hate. That is a message that will stay with us all forever.’
