The Art Department at Watford Girls offers a diverse and engaging range of subjects and specialisms, from Year 7 through to Year 13. Pupils benefit from having the choice of four subject areas at GCSE, Art Textiles, Fine Art, Art Graphics and Art Photography; and three subject choices at A level, Arts and Crafts, Art Textiles and Art Photography. The Art Department is high achieving, and encourages consistently good results across GCSE and A level; results are well above the National average and amongst the best in the School. Our subject specialists aim to promote skill excellence and creative diversity, and pupils are encouraged to pursue their own independent strengths and passions.
Key Stage 3
All pupils in Years 7,8,9 study Art for one hour a week, and lessons are broad ranging in skills, challenging and creative; involving exploration of drawing, painting, mark-making, independent design, three dimensional art, creative collage, art analysis and debate, photographic work, Textiles skills and clay work. The structure and skill content of lessons in Lower school, is intended to prepare your child for the curriculum challenges of GCSE and A level Art study. Pupils are encouraged to practise and fine tune key skills, creatively explore ideas and to develop an awareness of Art in the wider world through critical analysis and review.
Students learning in the classroom is enriched through local Gallery visits, workshops with our Artist in Residence and after school curricular opportunities including Clay Club. We also run an inclusive Art club, which focuses on large group work, public competitions and key skills. We have productive connections with past pupils, and are able to facilitate lectures on careers and Degrees in the Creative Industries, as well as having a public gallery space where pupils are exposed to current art practice, and have the opportunity to exhibit their own work. All students at GCSE and A level are invited to celebrate their artistic achievements in an end of year, professionally hung exhibition and we actively seek out public exhibition and competition possibilities for all students.
We offer Specialist art rooms and resources including a Kiln room, Photographic Studio, large GCSE and Sixth Form Studio and Textile Printing facilities. At GCSE and A level, pupils benefit from specialist skill workshops, Gallery visits and analysis and extended trips abroad to cultural centres including Paris, Venice and Florence.
Do enjoy looking through our separate subject specialisms and example artwork produced by past students.
