Design & Technology

“Design and Technology (D&T) is the inspiring, rigorous and practical subject which prepares all young people to live and work in the designed and made world.”                                          -Design and Technology Association

Overview

Design and Technology at Watford Grammar School for Girls provides students with opportunities to develop their capability through combining their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding of the wider design issues in order to produce high quality products.

By using an iterative approach to design and make challenges that cover a range of different contexts, pupils will explore the needs and demands of different user groups. Pupils will learn how to solve problems and take risks in order to become more resourceful, innovative and enterprising individuals.

Pupils will develop a critical understanding of the impact of design and technology on daily life and the wider world. Additionally, it provides excellent opportunities to develop and apply value judgements of an aesthetic, economic, moral, social, and technical nature both in their own designing and when evaluating the work of others.

KS3 (Years 7 – 9)

All pupils study Design and Technology in years 7 & 8 as part of a carousel system comprising of the following skill areas: Food & Nutrition, Product Design and Textiles Technology.  Each skill area offers a unique opportunity for pupils to explore a range of key issues related to product development.

In Year 9, pupils are given the chance to experience a taster GCSE course in Food and Nutrition and Product Design before GCSE choices are made.

KS4 (Years 10 – 11)

Pupils can opt to study the Product Design GCSE which is an exciting course offered by the department until September 2017. Pupils will explore the role and responsibilities of both designers and manufacturers within a fast changing technological world.

From September 2017 the Product Design GCSE will be replaced by the new reformed Design and Technology GCSE. The new course is designed to encourage pupils to design and make products using a wide range of materials and techniques whilst applying key knowledge from Maths and Science as well as developing creativity and entrepreneurial skills.

KS5 (Years 12 and 13)

Students have the opportunity to continue studying Design and Technology at AS/A Level at Watford Grammar School for Boys.
